Guide
Getting started: from nothing to a real DM
Connect an account, build one campaign, and prove it works by commenting your own keyword. About five minutes, and the checklist at the end is the part worth not skipping.
Before you start
You need two things: an Instagram Business or Creator account, and a post or reel that people actually comment on. Everything else is done inside the product, and nothing here requires a card or a developer.
A personal Instagram account will not work, and no tool can change that. Instagram only exposes comments and private replies on professional accounts, so the switch is a prerequisite rather than a preference.
Instagram Business vs Creator account: which do you need?
For automation, either works. Business and Creator are both professional accounts, both expose comments and private replies to approved apps, and nothing in AudienceKeeper branches on which one you picked. A personal account works for neither.
It is the question people ask most before signing up, and the honest answer is shorter than most articles about it.
| Account type | Works here? | Who Instagram aims it at |
|---|---|---|
| Business | Yes | Companies, shops and services with a location and contact details. |
| Creator | Yes | Public figures, content creators and anyone who is the brand themselves. |
| Personal | No | Private use. Instagram exposes no comment or messaging access on these. |
Both professional types behave identically here — nothing in the product branches on which one you picked. Choose on how you want your profile presented, not on what automation needs. Switching is free, takes about a minute in the Instagram app, and you can switch back.
The three steps
Recorded in the product rather than described, so you can see what each screen looks like before you meet it:
- 1
Connect Instagram
Sign up with an email address, then press Connect Instagram. That opens Instagram's own consent screen, where you approve the permissions and come back connected. We never see or ask for your password.

Build one campaign
Choose a post or reel, type the keyword people will comment, and write the DM they get back. Six starting templates cover the usual goals if you would rather edit than start blank.
When a comment containsREELS→ Send a DM - 3
Switch it on
The campaign goes live immediately and starts watching that post. The dashboard marks you ready, and from here the delivery log is where you check what happened.
Reel packCampaign is live
Connecting Instagram is an admin action. If you are a member of someone else's workspace, the onboarding will tell you to ask them, and it updates itself once they have done it.
Choosing a good first campaign
The temptation is to build it on your next big launch. Do the opposite: build it on something that already works, so you learn the tool when nothing is at stake.
- Pick a post that still gets comments. An old reel that quietly keeps getting traffic is ideal. A brand new post with no engagement teaches you nothing.
- Choose a keyword people can spell. LINK, GUIDE, PRICE. Avoid anything with punctuation, and avoid a word that already appears in ordinary comments on that post.
- Send one thing. One message, one link button. Up to 1,000 characters is allowed; far fewer usually reads better.
- Leave the extras off at first. Follow checks and follow-ups are useful later. On campaign one they just add places for something to be wrong.
The test checklist
Run this before the keyword goes into a caption in front of an audience. It takes two minutes and catches nearly everything.
Comment from a different account
Not the account that owns the post. Borrow a phone if you have to. The DM should arrive within seconds.
Tap your own link as that account
This catches a destination that is private, expired or behind a sign-in you happen to already have.
Check the log shows exactly one send
Two sends means two campaigns are matching the same word. Zero means something is off, and the log will name it.
Read your own DM as a stranger would
Does it answer what they asked, in your voice, without making them guess what the button does?
If nothing arrives
In order of how often each one is the culprit:
- The account is still personal. The connection will not complete properly and no comments come through.
- You commented from the account that owns the post. A business cannot send itself a private reply.
- The campaign is off, or watching a different post. Check the toggle and the selected posts.
- The keyword did not match. Whole-word matching means “GUIDES” does not match “GUIDE”. Loosen it or add the variant.
- The monthly allowance is used up. The log records these as skipped, naming the limit.
The delivery log is the first place to look in every one of these cases: nothing fails silently, and each row carries the reason.
Frequently asked questions
Creator vs Business account on Instagram: which is better for automation?
Neither is better for automation — that is the short version. Both are professional accounts, both expose comments and private replies to approved apps, and AudienceKeeper treats them identically. Instagram positions Creator at public figures and Business at companies with a location and contact details, so pick whichever fits how you present yourself. What you cannot use is a personal account.
How do I switch to a professional account?
In the Instagram app, open your profile, go to settings, and look for the option to switch to a professional account. It is free, it takes about a minute, and you can switch back. Doing it does not delete anything or change your posts.
Do you need my Instagram password?
No, and you should not give it to any tool that asks. Connection happens through Instagram's own consent screen, where you approve specific permissions and Instagram issues a token. We store that token encrypted and never see your credentials.
How long does setup take?
About five minutes if the account is already professional. Connecting is one approval screen; the campaign itself is a post, a keyword and a message. The slowest part is usually deciding what the message should say.
Can a team member connect the account?
Connecting Instagram requires the workspace admin role. A member who opens the onboarding sees a note asking the admin to do that step, and the checklist updates by itself once it is done. Pro covers 3 members.
What can I do on the free plan?
300 DMs a month on 1 campaign for 1 Instagram account, with 7 days of delivery logs and no card required. It is sized to get a real DM out of a real post so you can judge the thing, rather than to run a launch on.
Why has nothing been sent?
Work down the list: the account must be professional, the campaign must be switched on and watching the post you are commenting on, the keyword must match the way you configured it, and the comment must come from an account other than the one that owns the post. Every attempt and every skip is written to the delivery log with a reason.
