Guide
Instagram auto reply, and when you actually need a tool
Instagram answers messages automatically on its own, for free, and for a lot of businesses that is the end of the story. This guide covers what the native tools do, the one trigger they were never built for, and how to set up a keyword campaign if you need it.
- Native features linked to Meta's own docs
- Checked 13 September 2026
The short answer
To set up an auto reply on Instagram you need a Business or Creator account. Meta Business Suite then gives you instant replies, away messages, tappable FAQs and keyword responses to incoming messages, at no cost. A separate tool is only worth paying for when the thing you want to answer is a comment on a post, at volume, with a tracked link and a record of what was sent.
We sell one of those tools. We would still rather you tried the free ones first, because somebody who pays us for something Instagram already does asks for a refund a month later.
What Instagram does by itself
These are Meta's own features, set up in Meta Business Suite on a professional account. Each links to Meta's current documentation rather than to our description of it, because these change and their page will be right when ours is out of date.
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Instant replies | An automatic response to the first message somebody sends your business. Good for setting expectations about when a human will answer. |
| Away messages | A reply that goes out while you are away from the inbox, so an out-of-hours message is acknowledged rather than ignored. |
| Frequently asked questions | Preset questions a visitor can tap in a chat, each with a prepared answer. Handles the questions you get constantly. |
| Keyword responses | An automated answer when an incoming message contains a word you nominated. Configured in Meta Business Suite inbox automations. |
| AI auto replies | Meta's own AI answering routine questions on your behalf. Availability varies by account and region. |
If your need is “answer people who message me, faster and more consistently”, that list probably covers it. Set it up, spend nothing, and stop reading here.
Where the native tools stop
Meta ships changes to inbox automation regularly, and its help pages are the only trustworthy account of what is available to your account today. Rather than quote limits we cannot verify, here is what to check for before deciding you need anything else:
- Does it trigger on a comment, or only a message? This is the important one. Most creator campaigns are “comment GUIDE and I will send it”, which is a public comment producing a private reply.
- How many keywords, and how do they match? Exact match only, or partial. Whether case and punctuation matter. Whether one campaign can watch several posts.
- How quickly does it fire? A reply that lands while somebody is still scrolling behaves very differently from one that lands later.
- Can you see what was sent? A per-message record with outcomes, and click counts on any link, is what turns this from a gimmick into something you can judge.
A note on sources
Almost every article ranking for this search is published by a company selling automation, ours included. We have linked Meta's own pages above and deliberately not restated their limits as facts, because we cannot read those pages programmatically to keep the figures honest. Check them yourself; it takes two minutes.
A note on “Instagram autoresponder” apps
Search for an Instagram autoresponder and half the results are Android apps that install on your phone and type replies into the Instagram app for you. They are a genuinely different category from everything else on this page, and the difference matters more than the price.
| Phone apps that type for you | Official API tools | |
|---|---|---|
| How they work | Drive the Instagram app on a device, usually through accessibility permissions. | Send through endpoints Meta publishes for this purpose, after you approve access. |
| Runs when your phone is off | No. The device has to be awake and running. | Yes. Nothing depends on your phone. |
| Account risk | Automating the app itself is generally against Instagram's terms. Read them before installing anything. | The permitted route. Meta reviews the app before granting access. |
| Answers comments on a post | Usually not — most handle the inbox only. | Yes, that is the point of a private reply. |
We are the second kind, so we are not neutral here. But if what you want is a free autoresponder for your personal account, neither Meta's tools nor ours will help — professional accounts are a requirement for both, and the phone apps are the only thing that works around it. Understand what you are trading before you do that.
What a keyword campaign adds
A campaign on the official API is built around the comment trigger rather than the inbox. What that buys you:
- Up to 10 keywords per campaign, each matching as a whole word or anywhere inside the comment, whichever you choose.
- One campaign across up to 20 posts, or every post on the account, or the next reel you publish.
- A public reply as well as the DM, rotating through up to 10 variants so a busy thread does not show the same sentence repeatedly.
- Tracked link buttons, so clicks tie back to the post that earned them.
- A delivery log with the outcome of every attempt, kept 7 days on the free plan and 180 on Pro.
How the comment trigger works in detail, including the message sequence and the duplicate rules.
Setting one up
Three steps, recorded in the actual product rather than described:
- 1
Connect a professional account
Sign in and link a Business or Creator account through Instagram's own consent screen. No password is shared. A personal account cannot be connected, because Instagram does not expose comments or private replies on one.

Choose the trigger and write the reply
Pick the post or reel, type the word people will comment, and write the message they get back. A campaign holds up to 10 keywords and you decide whether each must match as a whole word or anywhere in the comment.
When a comment containsREELS→ Send a DM - 3
Switch it on and read the log
Every matching comment queues a send. Failures are retried, missed comments are swept up, and the log is the record of what actually went out and what was clicked.

Auto reply message examples
These are the starting templates the product ships with, copied from the code rather than written for this page. {username}is replaced with the commenter's handle, falling back to “there” when Instagram does not supply a name.

Two things make these work better than a generic autoresponder. They answer the specific thing that was asked, and they sound like a person. A message up to 1,000 characters is plenty; far shorter is usually better.
Turning auto-replies off
Worth knowing before you switch anything on, and a common enough search that it deserves an answer rather than a sales pitch.
- Meta's own automations: open Meta Business Suite, go to the inbox automation settings, and switch off the instant reply, away message or keyword response you no longer want.
- A keyword campaign here: toggle the campaign off in the dashboard. It stops immediately, nothing further is sent, and the log of what already went out stays.
- Everything at once: disconnect the Instagram account, either in our settings or from Instagram's own apps-and-websites screen. Revoking there stops any tool that was connected.
Frequently asked questions
Can you set up auto-reply on Instagram DMs?
Yes, and you may not need anything extra. Instagram's own tools cover instant replies to a first message, away messages, tappable FAQs and keyword responses to incoming messages, all set up in Meta Business Suite on a professional account. Start there before paying for a tool.
Does Instagram allow automated messages?
Yes. Meta builds automated replies into Business Suite itself, and it publishes an official API that approved apps use to send private replies. What is not allowed is unsolicited messaging: an automated message can only answer somebody who contacted you first.
Can I auto-reply to comments, not just messages?
A comment is a different trigger from a message, and it is the one most creators actually want, because the comment is public and the answer should be private. Meta's inbox automation has been growing in this direction, so check Business Suite first. A keyword campaign on the official API adds flexible matching, several posts at once, tracked links and a delivery log.
How do I set up auto reply on Instagram for free?
Instagram's own automated replies are free with a professional account. For comment-triggered DMs, AudienceKeeper's free plan sends 300 DMs a month on 1 campaign with no card, which is enough to automate one post and judge the result.
Can I auto-reply on a personal Instagram account?
No. Automated replies, whether Meta's own or through the API, require a Business or Creator account. Switching is free in the Instagram app under account settings and takes about a minute.
How do I turn off auto-reply on Instagram?
For Meta's own automations, open Meta Business Suite, go to the inbox automation settings and switch off the instant reply, away message or keyword response you no longer want. For a keyword campaign in AudienceKeeper, toggle the campaign off in the dashboard; it stops immediately and nothing further is sent.
Can I send an automated message when someone follows me?
Not through AudienceKeeper. A new follower has not sent you anything, so there is no comment or message to reply to, and the official API does not allow a message on that basis. Anything promising a welcome DM on follow is working outside what the API permits.
Why is my Instagram auto reply not working?
The usual causes: the account is personal rather than professional, permissions were not granted or have lapsed, the keyword does not match the way you expect because of whole-word settings, or the monthly allowance is used up. In AudienceKeeper each of those appears in the delivery log with a reason rather than failing silently.
Automate one post and judge it
Set Meta's free tools up first. If what you actually need is a comment answered with a link, the free plan here covers 300 DMs a month, which is enough to run one real post and decide.
